Course overview and content
This course will get you well acquainted with Berlin’s Museums while learning the fundamentals of drawing and image making from those who do it pretty well!
These masters will become your teachers in composition and arrangement of forms, in mark making and texture, how to build the architecture of an image, how rhythm and flow relates to emotion, narrative or concept within the artwork. There is so much to learn from the masters housed in these museums. You will be guided on how to look and draw from these artworks from a particular angle each week, we will then discuss how what you have learnt can be applied to your own work. Great artists from all of history have studied their art in their local museums to learn both timeless skills and how to take the ideas forward and become innovators. This course will build both your drawing skills, your art history and deepen your cultural connection to Berlin.
Where is the course taking place ?
Each week we will visit a different institution including
Alte Nationalgalerie
Neue Nationalgalerie
Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg
Gemäldegalerie
Kunstbibliothek
Kupferstichkabinett
Museum Berggruen
Hamburger Bahnhof or a lucky dip contemporary art institution depending on current exhibitions
When is the course taking place / dates and times?
Friday afternoons 3-5pm, Winter Course 8 weeks from 24th January - 14th March 2025
How much does the cost cost and what does it include ?
€450 includes guided teaching and discussion aimed at particular drawing skills and techniques.
What do I need to bring with me ?
For this course most importantly you will need to purchase the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Jahreskarte. This costs 25 Euro and will get you into all the mentioned museums and more for the whole year. You can even go back to your favourite exhibitions with friends and family on the weekend as long as you hit the right timeslot. It is possible to buy the Jahreskarte directly from the Alte Nationalgalerie which will be our first visit, you will just need to arrive early in order to do this. More info here: https://www.smb.museum/en/plan-your-visit/annual-tickets/
Other than that you will need a sketchbook and a range of pencils, an eraser, a pencil sharpener where you can collect the sharpenings. For colour studies it would be good to have a range of colour pencils. Only dry and non-messy materials are allowed in the museums - no charcoal!
