About the Course

Drawing is the foundation of all representational art.

In this six-week course, artist Jane Haycock will guide students through a carefully structured programme that combines direct study in Berlin's museums with practical studio sessions at Burnt Sienna. By alternating between looking and making, students develop a deeper understanding of observation, composition, proportion, light, tone and expressive mark-making.

Rather than simply copying artworks, the museum visits teach students how to look—analysing the decisions made by great artists and learning how those principles can be applied in their own work. Each museum session is followed by a studio class where observations are explored through sustained drawing exercises and individual tuition.

Whether you're new to drawing or looking to strengthen an existing practice, this course provides an inspiring and supportive environment to develop confidence, improve technical ability and establish a regular drawing habit.

Course Structure

Week One — Museum Visit

Meet at 3:00 pm at the designated museum for an afternoon of guided observation and sketchbook studies. Together we'll analyse composition, proportion, gesture, tonal relationships, edge quality and visual hierarchy while drawing directly from selected works.

Week Two — Studio Practice

Returning to Burnt Sienna, students develop ideas from the museum visit through longer observational drawing exercises. Individual guidance focuses on translating observation into confident drawing.

Week Three — Museum Visit

A second museum session introducing new collections, artists and approaches to observational drawing. Students continue building visual awareness through structured looking and sketchbook work.

Week Four — Studio Practice

Using material gathered during the previous museum visit, students deepen their understanding through sustained studio exercises and one-to-one feedback.

Week Five — Museum Visit

The final museum visit encourages increasingly independent observation while introducing more advanced ideas around composition, interpretation and personal visual language.

Week Six — Studio Practice

The course concludes with an extended studio session bringing together everything explored over the previous weeks. Students produce a resolved body of drawings and receive individual feedback, with advice on continuing their drawing practice beyond the course.
