A first step into oils

There is something special about slowing down, looking carefully and mixing a colour that feels just right. This afternoon gives you the time, materials and guidance to experience it for yourself.

Working from a still-life arrangement, you will learn how to turn what you see into a painting. We introduce the essentials through demonstrations and practical exercises, then help you develop your own response. You do not need to arrive with a finished idea or any specialist knowledge.

Burnt Sienna has been teaching in Berlin since 2016. Our classes bring together people who are curious about painting in a supportive studio community.

What you will explore

• How to organise your palette and mix colour.
• Looking at light, shadow and tonal relationships.
• Choosing and arranging a balanced composition.
• Using brushes and controlling the consistency of oil paint.
• Building your painting step by step, with individual guidance.

The focus is on learning through making: trying things, asking questions and gaining confidence with the materials.

Your afternoon in the studio

We begin with an introduction to the materials and a demonstration. You will then set up your composition, mix colours and work on your painting, with guidance as you go. There is time to look at the work together and discuss useful next steps.

Come on your own, with a friend, or as a pair. The class is equally suitable for a first encounter with oils and a gentle return after time away.

Everything you need to know

Materials: Oil-painting materials are provided. Wear clothes you do not mind getting paint on.

Location: Burnt Sienna, Kamminerstraße 9, 10589 Berlin-Charlottenburg. The studio is a short walk from Mierendorffplatz U7.

Taking your painting home: Oil paint dries slowly. We will advise you about handling and collecting your work.
